We’re used to seeing atomic bombs images. From afar, they even look beautiful. But when one explodes near you, that immaculate light will burn your skin and make you bleed spontaneously.

On 6 August 1945, the B-29 bomber Enola Gay took off from the North Field airbase on Tinian in the West Pacific. At 8.15am, 509th Composite Group commander Colonel Paul Tibbets arrived to the destination: Hiroshima. Thirty minutes before that, Second Lieutenant Morri Jeppson had removed all safety devices from “Little Boy”, an atomic bomb loaded with 60kg of uranium-235–the first to be exploded over any population in the planet.

This is what that population experienced 10,000m below.
